Islington’s Young Grant-Makers invest £80,000 in their community

15 local young people design, develop and decide on new funding.

Through the spring, a hot summer, and into the weeks before Christmas, 15 local young people have met every week to think about how they could make a difference to the lives of their neighbours, classmates, and colleagues.

With a budget of £80,000 to invest in Islington, they have met inspiring local people and charities, discussed their options, and made decisions that will help people across the borough.

The projects chosen by the Young Grant-Makers have a strong focus on wellbeing and mental health. As well as adventure camps, inclusive youth clubs, and confidence boosting fitness sessions there are awards to support young mental health ambassadors, and encourage younger people to talk about things that concern them.

Local creativity will also be harnessed through music sessions for autistic people, and matched mentoring to help young people make the most of opportunities in the borough.

After a successful pilot year we can’t wait to to welcome the 2019 generation of Young Grant-Makers.

We will be recruiting young people in February and March to work with us towards awarding additional money in the borough later in the year.

Next year’s participants will research pressing issues in their neighbourhoods, and learn how to design, publicise, and decide on effective local funding. They will be responsible for their own grants budget, and have their say on how money should be invested to help young people across the borough.

We will be bringing more updates on how the Young Grant-Makers’ chosen projects are getting on in the New Year.
