Out of The Box by Breakin’ Convention
Run by the hip hop theatre company Breakin’ Convention, Out of The Box invites a group of young people to come together to pitch a creative idea of what they collectively can work towards, such as a music documentary, a short film , a theatre piece, a music album or a live event. Once agreed, the group will organise roles, tasks, and budget themselves, with regular meetings and support from Breakin Convention artist mentors, including guest speakers in the field they have chosen. The project will build young people’s confidence and help give them the chance to become professional creatives.
Eat Club teaches young people, primarily aged 16 to 25, fundamental cooking skills in order to address food poverty and poor nutrition. The sessions not only serve as an introduction to cooking skills and healthy eating, but also develop young people’s social skills and confidence, helping to improve their future employment prospects.
The Floating Garden – Global Generation
Starting in September 2021, Global Generation will run a year-long project with young people aged 11 to 21 that will transform the inside and outside of a barge into a community space – the Floating Garden. The sessions will be held at the barge itself on the canal-side at Granary Square as well as Global Generation’s Story Garden in King’s Cross. This project proposal has been developed with and is based on the ideas of a group of Islington young people who took part in creating the designs for the barge with Global Generation’s team and architects over the summer of 2020. Global Generation will provide training and support in developing practical, social and leadership skills, working as a team, building up confidence, public speaking and working with other local partners, such as community groups and businesses.
Rose Bowl Skills Gap Project by Isledon Arts CIC
A project that will help inform young people of school leaving age about the various career opportunities that are identified in the Shortage Occupation List (SOL). Together with the team, young people will explore training and apprenticeship opportunities which will help them gain knowledge and understanding of how to choose a career path that will sustain them financially for life. Young people will also take part in group work and one-to-one sessions where they will create CVs and receive mentoring from skilled youth workers.
Film Industry Continuum by Mary’s Youth Club
This film project run by Mary’s Youth Club encourages young people to express themselves and to try new things. It will also showcase talents through film, and share technical knowledge such as production and exhibition. By the end of the project, young people will have created short films which will be showcased in a film festival.
Work Skills Programme by National Youth Theatre (NYT)
The Work Skills Programme will offer employability skills training and work experience placements to support the personal and social development of older pupils and recent former pupils at two schools in Islington supporting pupils with physical and mental disabilities: Richard Cloudesley and Samuel Rhodes. Participants will develop the project alongside staff from partner schools. It will also help shape NYT’s partnerships with other secondary schools in the borough, building on the support they can offer to local young people including opportunities for progression into employment.
Break the Cycle – Fixing Bikes, Changing Lives by YES Outdoors
YES Outdoors will build on their popular and successful ‘Break the Cycle’ project, where 14- to 21-year-olds learn a range of bike maintenance skills, from fixing punctures to replacing key components. At the end of the course, the young people can get a free bike they have repaired. The young people are mentored by trained staff, and encouraged to discuss and share their goals, aspirations, issues, and barriers.
