Space is at a premium in Islington
Our borough is home to over 230,000 people, making it more populous than substantial UK towns and cities like Bolton, Swindon, and York. Islington is the most densely populated local authority in the UK, and the second smallest London borough by area.
For perspective, Islington has a higher population density than Bogota and Delhi. Despite being home to some of the most expensive property in the UK, thousands of homes are legally defined as 'overcrowded'. It also has the least green space per head of population of any local authority in the UK.
All of these factors can have an impact on mental and physical health and wellbeing. A lack of space means that there are less places for children to play, and many families are faced with difficult decisions about their futures.
Giving space in Islington
Despite these challenges, our borough is also home to some fantastic green spaces and parks. We have a thriving gardening scene, which even gets competitive! Read more about Islington Council's annual Islington in Bloom competition here.
Our local community is home to lots of inspiring people doing their bit to make the best of the space we have. As well as our famous canals, wonderful spots like Culpeper Community Garden are open all year round. Spaces like Freightliners City Farm allow families to learn new things, and spend time with animals. The urban oasis of Global Generation's Skip Garden provides calm amongst the new King's Cross developments. You can see other examples of amazing, accessible spaces using our interactive map.
We also work with All Change, Cubitt Education, North London Cares, and Arsenal in the Community to provide space for older people to socialise on Saturdays. You can read more about these creative weekend sessions here.
Our partners at The BIG Alliance (Businesses for Islington Giving) connect volunteers from local businesses, who give time to maintain our precious outdoor spaces and parks. Some business members of the BIG Alliance also open their doors to host events and social sessions for local people of all ages. Read more about how businesses are giving space (as well as money, time and skills) to our community, here.
