Young Grant Makers Report 2023-2024

2023 marked the sixth year of the Young Grant Makers (YGM) programme, working with a group of young people aged 16-24. This was also the first year that the programme was facilitated by former Young Grant Makers.

The Young Grant Makers programme is part of Islington Giving’s developing work to include more residents in making decisions about how our funds are used in the borough. We know that local people have extensive experience of using local services, they know where there are gaps in provision, and what kind of projects can meet the needs of their peers. Over the years, Young Grant Makers have taught us so much about the needs of younger people in the borough, the work we fund and how we can go about it in a more inclusive way. This year’s cohort were no different.

Based on our Young Grant Makers programme, Islington Giving have to date also run two decision making panels for parents, two for older people in the borough, and one for unpaid carers.

This report describes the 2023-24 project, reflecting the experiences of the two former Young Grant Makers, Izzy Petriti and Freya Johnson, who led and facilitated the programme this year.

“Overall, this role has given me a lot of experience and a lot of joy. It is so important for young people to be listened to, taken seriously, and exposed to the world of decision-making and leadership.”

Freya,  former Young Grant Maker and 2023-2024 Co-Lead
