Pride Month: Inequalities persist in the borough for LGBTIQ+ people

As we’re nearing the end of Pride Month, we wanted to talk about our LGBTIQ+ communities and the state of equalities in Islington. We’ve talked to two partner organisations, Islington Mind and MEWSo.

June is Pride Month, and many people have come together online to celebrate and to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots.

Islington has been highly influential in the growth of the LGBTIQ+ community and has a rich queer history, well documented by Islington’s Pride initiative. However, inequalities persist in the borough for LGBTIQ+ people.

Half of LGBTIQ+ people in Islington reported experiencing depression in the last year, with this proportion increasing to 62% for LGBTIQ+ people who have experienced homophobic hate crime. Sadly, young LGBTIQ+ people under 26 are more likely to commit suicide and to self-harm than the rest of population. Trans people are more likely to experience poverty, discrimination, and mental health problems.

We’d like to highlight the work that local partner organisations are doing in the borough to support LGBTIQ+ communities in the borough, Islington Mind and MEWSo.
