Building the confidence of girls

With lockdown restrictions starting to lift, community groups like Prospex are now able to conduct face-to-face sessions with their young people.

Prospex help improve the opportunities and experiences of at-risk young people in Islington. The girls’ group received funding from the Young Grant-Makers 2020, and provides a space for 11 to 14 year-old girls to look at their lives, their hopes and the challenges they face in achieving their goals. The group encourages members  to have frank conversations about mental health, healthy relationships and other topics identified by participants. One of the things young people say they want from an activity is a safe space, where they can share ideas and not be judged. Prospex offers this in abundance.

Loretta is one of the participants of the girls’ group, and after forming a great bond with the other girls, she has now started encouraging others to ask questions, be braver and speak out when they are feeling anxious.

A parent of a member has seen benefits too. “My 14 year-old daughter who is homeschooled found the girls group Zoom informative, well organised and she enjoyed the girls group pack, thank you for a well organised group.”

Funding opportunities for girls in Islington

Thanks to the donations to the Children and Young People’s Appeal,  Islington Giving’s Young Grant-Makers 2021 will have more money to give out to local groups. Our Young Grant-Makers programme programme has been running for four years now and funds local projects that make a difference to young people in Islington. Young people who live in the borough make all the decisions about which projects to support, and that is what makes this programme so special.
