A guided walk through the LGBTQ+ History of Islington

In May, we went on the first guided Islington LGBTQ+ walk after Covid-19 restrictions eased.

Starting at Angel tube station and ending at Highbury Fields the walk includes Islington’s significant LGBTQ+ “firsts” such as the UK’s first gay mayor, MP, march and demonstration as well local characters such as Joe Orton, Derek Jarman and the extraordinary Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

This guided walk is offered by Clerkenwell and Islington’s Tour Guide Association in partnership with Islington Heritage and funded by Islington’s Pride, an heritage lottery fund funded LGBTQ+ archive project.

Thank you Karen Landsdown, our walking tour guide, and Sebastian Wirth from City University for documenting it so well!

Find out more about upcoming walks around the borough.
