Local resident, Nicola, strongly believes in the mental health benefits of paddleboarding as an active way to get fit, try something new and re-engage with the community.
The pilot project consisted of running ‘dry’ workshops at two community centres before an invitation to go on the water at Islington Boat Club.
The project was a success, and Nicola was awarded another grant in round 6 to provide a block of paddleboarding sessions for people who have mental ill health and substance misuse issues.
“We had such fun at all the pilots. One group, who have different challenges including low confidence, physical pain and poor mental health, had the most brilliant time on the water learning to paddleboard. They enjoyed a ‘holiday’ from their difficult situations and all but one were really keen to come out again.”
Do you have a project idea that could make a positive difference in your community? The Make It Happen fund is a small grants scheme for Islington residents that offers funding up to a maximum of £500 for people to act on things they care about locally. Apply by 19 May 2025.
